Background of the Study
Language standardization in Nigeria has traditionally been influenced by formal education and print media; however, digital platforms are increasingly playing a role in reshaping linguistic norms. This study focuses on Twitter hashtags, which have become powerful symbols in online discourse. Hashtags on Twitter encapsulate ideas, movements, and trends that often challenge established language standards. Nigerian users employ hashtags not only as categorization tools but also as vehicles for linguistic creativity, where unconventional grammar, spelling, and syntax can gain widespread acceptance (Adenuga, 2023). This phenomenon raises questions about the role of social media in either reinforcing or disrupting language standardization processes. By examining the language used in Twitter hashtags, this research investigates how digital practices influence what is considered “standard” language in Nigeria. The study also considers the socio-cultural dynamics that encourage innovative language use, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of digital influences on language norms (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
While traditional models of language standardization in Nigeria have been well documented, the impact of social media—especially Twitter hashtags—on standard language practices is underexplored. Preliminary observations suggest that digital interactions may be redefining standard usage, yet empirical research on this phenomenon is limited. This study seeks to understand how Twitter hashtags contribute to language change and whether they promote non-standard forms or eventually become integrated into standard language practices (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine language patterns in Nigerian Twitter hashtags.
To assess the impact of digital communication on language standardization.
To propose a model linking digital practices with language norms.
Research Questions:
How do Twitter hashtags influence language standardization in Nigeria?
What non-standard language features emerge from hashtag usage?
Can digital innovations eventually be integrated into standard language practices?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative role of social media on language standardization in Nigeria. Its findings provide valuable insights for linguists, educators, and policymakers seeking to understand the evolving landscape of digital communication and its impact on linguistic norms (Adenuga, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Language Standardization: The process by which certain language forms are designated as the norm.
Twitter Hashtags: Keywords or phrases preceded by a hash symbol used on Twitter.
Digital Communication: Exchange of information through electronic media.
